Online Casino Games, Tips and Rules

HISTORY

The origin of Roulette remains unclear. One theory attributes the creation of Roulette to Blaise Pascal, a 17th Century French mathematician, while others claim that the game was invented in China and brought to Europe by Dominican monks. In any case, the term 'Roulette' comes from the French word meaning 'small wheel'. The modern version of Roulette was created by Francois and Louis Blanc, two Frenchmen who invented the single '0' Roulette game in 1842. In America, the single '0' game was rejected and replaced with the '00' game, which gained immense popularity during the California Gold Rush. As a result, the two different wheels have been called the American Wheel and the French Wheel and can still be found today in casinos around the world.

TIPS

Virtually all American casinos use a double-zero roulette wheel which has pockets numbered from 1 to 36, plus 0 and 00 for a total of 38 pockets. This is in contrast to Europe where a single-zero wheel is used and the game has always been the most popular in the casino.

There are usually six seats at the roulette table and to help the dealer differentiate what each player is betting every player is assigned a different color chip which they purchase right at the table. Each table has its own minimum chip values and that information is usually posted on a sign at the table. As an example let’s say a table has a $1 minimum chip value. This means that when you give the dealer your money the colored chips he gives you in return must have a minimum value of $1 each. So, if you gave the dealer $50 he would ask what value you wanted on the chips and if you said $1 he would give you 50 colored chips.

If you prefer, you could say you wanted the chips valued at $2 each and he would just give you 25 chips rather than 50. You can make the value of your colored chips anything you want and you’ll notice that when the dealer gives you your chips he’ll put one of your chips on the railing near the wheel with a marker on top to let him know the value of your chips. Later on when you’re done playing at that table you must exchange your colored chips for regular chips before leaving. The colored chips have no value anywhere else in the casino so don’t leave the table with them.

PLACING BETS

In order to place a bet in Roulette, chips must first be purchased from the croupier. The chips used in roulette differ from those used by the casino and are usually arranged in six or seven different color sets of 300. The table is laid out in such a way to contain 38 different numbers with a variety of betting options:

Outside Bets
Any bet that does not specifically include one of the 38 numbers is considered an Outside Bet. The Outside Bets in Roulette are Red or Black, Odd or Even, Low or High, Columns, and Dozens.

Red or Black simply means betting on the color of the outcome. Wins are paid in even money. The same goes for Odd or Even, which is based on whether the outcome will be an odd or even number. Low or High bets allow the player to place bets on whether the number will fall on the numbers 1-18 or 19-36. This is also an even money bet. Column bets are made by placing chips at the end of one of the sets of 38 numbers designated by the words "2-1," which pays back two to one if the outcome falls in the selected column. A Dozens bet is made by placing chips on the areas separating the numbers into three dozens and also includes a 2 to 1 payback.

Inside Bets
Inside bets are placed on specific numbers or number combinations. The total of the bets must meet the table minimum and includes Straight-up Bets, Split Bets, Street Bets, Corner Bets, and Five Number Bets.

Making a Straight-up Bet simply means placing chips on one of the 38 number options with a payback of 35 to 1. A split bet means placing chips on two different numbers adjacent to each other on the table with a payback of 17 to 1 for a winning outcome. Street Bets allow betting on three different numbers by placing chips on the outside edge of the chosen row. The payback is 11 to 1. To make a Corner Bet, chips are placed at the intersection of four different numbers with an 8 to 1 payback. A Five Number Bet only has one betting option, which means placing chips on the corner intersection of the 0 and 1. To win the payback of 6 to 1, the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2, or 3 must be included in the outcome.

Casino roulette dealers continue to accept bets after the ball has been dropped and will signal an end to betting both verbally and by waving their hand. When the ball comes to a halt, the number is called out by the dealer who places a clear plastic container over the winning number and chips before clearing away losing bets from the table. Once the payouts have been completed, players proceed again to make their bets.
